STEPS History
Celebrating over 30 years
Following the birth of her son Daniel with clubfoot, Sue Banton discovered that families affected by lower limb conditions had nowhere to turn. The frustration and isolation she faced motivated her to write to Mother & Baby and Parenting magazines. This letter signified the beginning of STEPS as Sue received over 60 responses to her letter from anxious parents in the same situation as herself and a self help group was formed in 1980. Eight years later, STEPS became a registered charity and due to demand had expanded support to parents with children affected by hip dysplasia and other lower limb conditions.
STEPS has come a long way since the early days when Sue set up a helpline which she initially ran from her attic. In 2010, Sue received an MBE in the New Years Honours List and STEPS proudly celebrated its 30th anniversary.
STEPS is the leading voice of lower limb conditions. Everything we do is about valuing and supporting individuals, families and carers affected by clubfoot, hip dysplasia or any other lower limb condition.
Every year, we help over 2000 families who contact STEPS, often in desperation, for clear information about their child’s condition, the treatment options available and how to care for their child on a daily basis.
