Sarah's Story

Sarah lives in Australia and was born with fibular hemmimelia.

My name is Sarah Walsh and I was nine in July. I am an amputee. Being an Amputee means you are missing a limb or part of a limb. when I was born I was missing a bone in my right leg. I was 17 months old when my foot was amputated. I wear an artifical leg so that I can walk, run and play like everyone else. I do gymnastics and swimming every week. I go for a surf most weekends, even in the winter. Because of my leg I have met people like Gary Blaschke, Jim Bradley and Ian Picton from The Disabled Surfers Association who helped me to learn to surf. I can now get up on a surfboard, stand up and surf to the shore. It is a great feeling. I surfed in Ireland last year where it was cold even though it was summer. I sail with Len Snowdon from Sailability and I am friends with a Lady called Anna who lost her leg when she was young because of Cancer. I also know Todd Philpott who is a World Hand cycling Champion.

I recently got a new leg which was made for me by Rudi Dollier at the Appliance and Limb Centre, Redfern. It is Black with pink, yellow, red and Blue and it says "Take it Easy". My friends love my new leg and so do I. I, like most people in NSW get my Limbs throught he Public system (Artifical Limb Service). I am growing so much I need 3 new legs each year.

I have been a member of the Amputee Association since I had my Surgery and every year at school I put up the poster for Amputee Awareness Day and talk to my schoolmates and teachers at Assembly about being an Amputee.

Because of my Limb Difference I have met wonderful people who I would never have met if I had two legs.
Thank you for giving me the opportunity of telling you my story.

Sarah.
