THE DIARY OF SAM PAYNE AGED 6

OPERATION ON MY RIGHT FOOT

Sunday 12TH November 06

THIS IS MY FIRST DAY WRITING IN MY NEW DIARY.  I’M HAVING AN OPERATION ON MY FOOT ON  WEDNESDAY 29TH November 06.  I HAD AN OPERATION LAST YEAR BUT MY SURGEON MR GENT SAYS THAT IT DIDN’T MAKE MY FOOT BETTER.  HE NEEDS TO DO SOME MORE SURGERY TO MAKE MY FOOT BETTER.  I AM HAVING TWO OPERATIONS; ONE TO ALTER MY TENDONS ON THE FRONT OF MY FOOT AND THEN I WILL HAVE A SPECIAL FRAME FITTED.  MR GENT SAYS I MUST KEEP THE FRAME ON FOR QUITE A LONG TIME.  MUMMY AND DADDY ARE GETTING ME A WHEELCHAIR AND A FUNNY TOILET AS WELL.  I WILL WRITE IN MY DIARY EVERY DAY AFTER MY FIRST OPERATION TO SEE HOW I’M GETTING ON.  BYE FOR NOW.  SAM.

 Tuesday 28th November 06

Hello again.  I should be going into hospital today, Mummy is waiting for a phone call asking me to go in.  I’m feeling happy because I’m going to be in my wheelchair and Mummy and Daddy will take me into hospital today.  My friends drew pictures of themselves, Kerrie, Kira, Summer, Ellie, Jack G, Alexander, Herbie, Kurtis, Kira, David, Elliott, Ciera, Alfie, Max, Callum, Jack, Gaby, Lauren, Callum, Mia, Dael, Ruben C, Thais and Sammy.  They put the pictures in a big card for me and Mrs McErlean presented it to me at the end of the day.  She walked through with me to my brother Matthew’s class and said good luck to me, Matthew and Mummy.

 Wednesday 29th November 06

I had my operation and plaster on today, I did not like the mask over my face, it was too scary.  I’ve got some pain today. Nanny, Grandad, Daddy and Matthew came to visit me tonight but I still feel a bit sore.

 Thursday 30th November 06

I feel happy because the lady put the red plaster on today.  I’ve got a wheelchair, I like it very much.  My foot hurts a little bit but I hope to go home today.  I didn’t sleep very well last night but I’m much better now.  I have come home today and I’m very tired but glad to be out of hospital.  Mummy and Daddy are taking care of me.

Friday 1st December 06

Daddy went away with some friends today very early this morning at 4.15am!  He kissed me goodbye and we will see him on Sunday.  I had a good nights sleep in Mummy’s bed last night and feel very well today.  I am taking medicine which is tasty so I’m not in any pain at the moment.  Grandma and Grandad Tom visited today and we had some lunch and played.

Saturday 2nd December 06

I went with Matthew round to Nanny and Grandads today to do the Christmas decorations and that was fun.  We put some sweets on the Christmas tree.  Grandad put some tinsel on my wheelchair.  Matthew went to the park with our cousin Jack for a while today and I felt a bit upset about that but Mummy tells me that I have to rest for a few days, it’s boring but she knows best!  I saw Auntie Amy and Pete so that was nice.  Auntie Sue and Uncle Rob came round today to visit and they brought loads of presents for me and Matthew and it was lovely to see them.  Daddy rang up to say hello and sent some kisses.

Sunday 3rd December  06

Today is a good day, I feel happy because I’ve got lots of cards to look at.  I feel very well and have not had to take any medicine at all today so my foot must be healing up well.  Mummy will give me medicine before I go to bed because it helps me sleep.  Daddy is coming home today and I can’t wait to see him.  Matthew has gone to Auntie Amy’s to play with Jack.  Mummy says that’s because we’ve been arguing a lot.  It’s only that I get cross with Matthew when he touches my wheelchair and my frame but I will start to let him play if he promises not to break things.  I know Mummy doesn’t like it when me and Matthew argue.

Thursday 7th December 06

Today I went back to school and saw all my friends and teachers.  It was great to be back.  My wheelchair keeps on bumping into things.  The weather has been horrible lets hope it stops raining soon.

Monday 11th December 06

The weather is still awful and Mummy, me and Matthew have all been getting really wet and fed up.  It’s cold now as well and I am only wearing shorts because of my plaster.  Never mind.  I had a great weekend, I went to my friend Ellie’s party at Apollo Cinema and saw ‘happy feet’.  What a good film, all about penguins and I really laughed, but not at the huge whale.  We’re all getting ready for Christmas, Daddy put up our tree and decorations yesterday and I’ve been helping Mummy get the Christmas shopping, phew, what hard work Christmas is.  My play is Wednesday and Mummy and Nanny will come and watch.  Matthews play is tomorrow morning and Mummy and Grandma will go to that.  Mrs McErlean has been lovely and this morning I got a Certificate from Mrs Corner as I was ‘sunshine of the week’.  Mummy watched my special assembly.

Thursday 14th December 06

I took all my Christmas cards to school today to hand out.  Mummy wrote them all out a few nights ago.  We are having such a good week at school.  We saw ‘little red riding hood’ performed today by a theatre company.  It was really good.  Matthew has not had a good day today, he’s been in trouble at school but he has promised to be good and Mummy and Daddy are keeping an eye on him.

Happy   new   year!!   Tomorrow I have a check up with mr gent, hopefully I’ll have a new plaster.

 Monday  8    January 07

I have a new blue plaster which Mummy has written on.  I can walk with a special shoe but I still have to use my wheelchair when I go walking out and about.  I am enjoying being at school especially now that I can walk.  Mr gent is going to let me have a break from the plaster before he fits my special frame to my foot.  So at the moment I feel as fit as a fiddle!  Matthew and I went to stay with Nanny and Grandad over the weekend because Mummy had college and she goes up to Doncaster for that so Daddy took her this time because she couldn’t get a train.  We had a great time and we ate and ate and ate and ate until our tummys were full up to bursting with all the lovely things Nanny has at her house.

Tuesday 30th January 2007

Today I had my plaster off.  Mr Gent says there is a little hole underneath my foot.  I was very brave.  Now I’ve come home to walk and I am very good.  I have had a bath and my stitches fell out!  Mr Gent wants to see me in four weeks time and my big operation is on Friday 9th March.  See you soon.

Wednesday 21st February 2007

I am having my operation soon in March on the 15th and 16th.  I can’t wait for it all to be over.  It’s half term and we are having a good day with Auntie Amy and Jack.  We have all been good until just a minute ago when we made a mess in the garden and Mummy and Auntie Amy got cross!!!   See you soon.

Sunday 25th February 2007

Today we all went to Paultons Park.  It was all arranged by Nanny and Grandad and we had a brilliant time.  It was our last day out for a while because of my operation.  Matthew, Daddy and I went on practically everything, we did the roller coasters, water rides, slides, trampolines, bouncy castle, merry go rounds, the park, we had such a great time.  Mummy only came on a couple of things with us, she doesn’t really like fairground rides and she likes to watch.  We went out for dinner afterwards and had a nice meal.  We all really enjoyed ourselves.

Saturday 3rd March 2007

It was my friend Cieras birthday party today at Fun City.  I love Ciera and she is one of my best friends.  Matthew had a party too, Dylans.  Daddy was busy today taking us to these parties because Mummy is away at college again.  We had a good time.

Wednesday 7th March 2007

I’m not very well at the moment.  Mummy thinks I might have tonsillitis again.  I have a very sore throat and have been a bit sick at school.  Hopefully in a couple of days I’ll be ok.  It was very funny at school because Grandma had to come and get me but Grandad Tom also came to get me and didn’t know his way round the school, he must have looked very lost!

Friday 9th March 2007

I went to the doctor today because Mummy and Daddy were worried that I wasn’t getting better.  The doctor said it’s probably not tonsillitis but we need to keep an eye on me.  I have to be well enough for my operation or Mr Gent won’t be able to do it.

Wednesday 14th March 2007

I took some sweets in to my class, Sunshines, and they really enjoyed them.  Mrs Thomas said to me that I had to stand by the door to give sweets out to the class.  I felt really really sad that I was going to miss everyone.  Mrs McErlean gave me a big hug when I went home.

Thursday 15th March 2007

I went in to hospital with Mummy and Daddy.  I did not want my operation because it was really scary.  I met a nice nurse called Jeannie and she looked after me.  I also met Rhiannon the physiotherapist who explained to me all about the exercises I have to do.  I went downstairs to have some dinner in the restaurant.

Friday 16th March 2007

I went down to operating theatre at 9.30am and it finished about 1.25pm.  When I woke up my frame was on but Mr Gent put in a little thing by my big toe and I can’t feel it when I scratch it!  Mr Gent did a cut in my foot and it wasn’t fun! But the nurses Grace and Melissa looked after me and they were also nice every day.  They took me down to theatre in a lift, I was very, very, very brave and I got a certificate from the lady in the operating theatre afterwards and she was very nice too.

Saturday 17th March 2007

Today I had some visitors.  They were Nanny, Grandad, Matthew and Uncle Mark.  Daddy was working and came along a bit later.  I got sweets, presents and cards.

Sunday 18th March 2007

It was Mothers Day! and Matthew had written out a card for Mummy and his writing was excellent.  Grandma, Grandad Tom, Auntie Amy, Jack, Peter, Auntie Sue and Uncle Rob all visited today.  Uncle Rob gave me a present called sticker maker.

Monday 19th March 2007

I was crying because my foot was hurting.  Mr Gent had put a tube in my willy and put an epidural by my back and on Sunday night the nurses took the tubes out and it really hurt me.  They did my pin sites and they hurt me again.  My pin sites have to be cleaned and it stings!   Nanny and Grandad visited again but I didn’t feel that great.  As the day went on I started to feel better, my painkillers were working at last.

Tuesday 20th March 2007

Hooray!!  The doctors and nurses said I could go home.  I have practiced my physio and can use my walking frame.  We went to the car and my Toy Story balloon flew away and I was crying but Mummy said that I could get a real toy of Toy Story.  I will write to you again when my frame is nearly ready to come off.

Sunday 13th May 2007

I have had my frame on for eight weeks now.  I was very very very brave when I was in hospital.  I will be having my frame off soon.  Mr Gent will put a plaster on my foot.  When my plaster is off my foot will be straight!  I will be walking properly.  We are going away for a long weekend to Somerset the first weekend of the summer holidays and I am really looking forward to that.  I will have no plaster and no frame and it will feel great!

I will write to you again soon.

Saturday 26th May 2007

I went to a wedding at Petersfield today.  It was Mummys cousin Cheryl who was the bride.  It was a really good wedding with a fair for children.  Cheryl had a very long dress and it looked beautiful.  I went on the bumper cars with my frame on!  Matthew and me had smart suits on and so did our cousin Jack.  we went to the wedding reception on a big double decker bus.  Our hair blew everywhere!!  It was cold..  my frame comes off on 6th june.  See you soon.

Saturday 23 June 07

My frame came off on Wednesday 6th June and I was fine.  Mummy and Daddy came to hospital with me.  I have a plaster on my foot!!  I can walk a bit..

I was very very very very very very brave in hospital.

On Thursday I had a spelling test and I got them all right!  Yesterday I was poorly but I am still poorly today.  We went to the hospital to have my red plaster on because the white plaster was all broken so it needed to be made stronger.  Grandma and Grandad Tom looked after Matthew so Mummy could take me by myself.  We had to go up to the ward G3 but we didn’t see my lovely nurse Grace.  It must have been her day off.  Today Nanny came round to see me and Matthew.  She had lunch with us and we played and read books and watched a bit of telly.  Tonight we are having Chinese food for tea.  Matthew and me will have chicken balls with sweet and sour sauce on them!  Yummy!  We might have some prawn crackers too.  See you soon.  Sam

Saturday 4th August 2007

Hello, I have got my plaster off!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I cried a little bit when I had my plaster off.  I have got some new shoes and they are blue.  My shoes were really nice.  My foot feels ok.  My exercises are making me stronger so that I can go to the park and ride my bike.  I won’t be writing to you any more because all my operations have finished and I am nearly back to normal.  Thanks for listening.  Bye,

Samuel John Payne
