Pioneering the Mother and Baby Pathway 26th – 27th November 2009
We know how important midwives can be for the wellbeing of mothers-to-be and new mothers and for the care of the unborn and newborn child, but many midwives are not aware of STEPS. With this in mind nearly all the STEPS office was involved in manning a stand at the two day conference in Manchester this year.
We were also invited to give a joint presentation with the NHS Newborn & Infant Physical Examination Programme (NIPE). STEPS parent Oonagh Keith and Programme Director Professor Adrian Davis gave a joint presentation on the importance of the newborn physical examination and how midwives can have a key role in delivering this. Oonagh talks about her personal experience with her daughter, Siomha’s diagnosis and treatment for DDH and how early detection would have made such a difference to her life.
Oonagh says, 'I want them to know that early treatment and early prevention equals normal life. That's all I want out of it,' she said of tomorrow's presentation.’

Professor Davis added,
'I hope that by making this joint presentation at the Royal College of Midwives' annual conference we can highlight the value of learning from the experiences of parents and representative organisations like STEPS.’
